Celebrities Who You Might Not Know Were Real-Life Heroes

There have been a lot of terrible celebrity stories in recent years, but every so often, it’s good to remember that not all our favourite stars are monstrous narcissists. In fact, some of them are heroes.

Yes, you read that right — heroes. And if you don’t know that these celebrities were heroic in real life, then they did their job well. As we’ve pointed out before, being a hero is about more than just public recognition — it’s about doing what needs to be done without asking for anything in return.

Sometimes it seems like celebrities spend all their time shopping and attending award shows. But in fact, many celebrities have saved lives or used their fame to get involved with a variety of causes. Some celebs might be known for their larger-than-life heroism, but others are surprisingly low-key about their good deeds.

These people were all regular folks until someday when the moment came where they had to do something nobody else would: Maybe save a life, or risk their own freedom. They weren’t looking for praise or attention — and some still aren’t comfortable with it when they get it — but their stories deserve to be told anyway.

Calvin Richard Klein

Early Life

Calvin Klein was born in The Bronx, New York. His parents were Hungarian Jewish immigrants. He attended the High School of Art and Design after which he enrolled at the Fashion Institute of Technology from where he graduated in 1962 with honours. During his college years, he worked as an apprentice at Dan Millstein’s Manhattan boutique where he learned to make suits. At this time his taste in fashion was classic and conservative. He also worked at other stores including Bonwit Teller and Dan Millstein’s Greenwich Village shop where he met Barry Schwartz who later went on to become Klein’s business partner.

Career

Calvin Richard Klein was always interested in fashion and design since his childhood. Even when he was young, he began drawing sketches of women’s clothes and selling them for $10 each to his neighbours’ wives in order to earn money. He worked there for two years before leaving to work for other clothing companies like Evan-Picone, a sportswear company where he worked for five years until 1967.

Klein started designing women’s coats while still in college. After graduating from college, he started designing coats under his name which were then sold at Lord & Taylor department store right after his graduation in 1962. It was not until 1968 that he finally launched a line of women’s suits that were best known.

In 1968, Calvin Klein launched his own business with one friend Barry Schwartz who provided him with $10,000 as initial capital. They started off by designing coats which they sold in their first store called The New York Coat Company which was situated on Seventh Avenue in New York City between 34th and 35th streets.
