While you can find boxing gloves with different colors and styles, but there are always some limitations to them in terms of colors, styles, logo, etc. So, how do you get a pair of personalized boxing gloves?
Boxing Gloves
The manufacturing of boxing gloves varies from brand to brand, with each brand having its unique processes and unique build styles or shapes. No two factories will produce a boxing glove with the same build style or type by using the same processes. So, exactly how boxing gloves are made? – Below is a quick step-by-step rundown of the process for you.
Evolution of Boxing Gloves – Protection
The first step for making a boxing glove is cutting the outer materials for it. The quality of a glove primarily depends on the materials used to manufacture it. Boxing gloves are made from thin cowhides or synthetic leather (synthetic leather gloves are a huge no!).
Other than that, there are few unique materials too, for instance, buffalo leather – however, these are uncommon. Synthetic leather is used to cut costs, resulting in a range of quality. Some gloves are made with really cheap vinyl, while some are quite indistinguishable from genuine leather. Truth be told, leather gloves are of a higher quality and are incredibly durable if you treat them right.

The thumb of the gloves is usually cut from the same sheet of leather, while occasionally, it is cut separately and stitched onto the rest of the glove later. This is dependent on the type of padding used and the build of the boxing glove.
Parts like the Velcro cuff, along with any other patches, are assembled in this stage also but are kept separate from the rest of the glove – for now at least – moving on to the aesthetics.
What usually comes after assembling patches is the aesthetic design of the boxing gloves. Graphics are important to take care of while the material is still flat to avoid printing issues. If this process is done when the glove is already in assembling that it will get a lot harder to get the print right, and it will also limit the printable area.

Printing is followed by stitching; getting the glove in shape before the padding is put in is essential. The base of the glove sleeve is stitched inside out at the beginning, meaning the glove is inverted; most of the stitches and seams are on the inside. After the printing is done, features like breathable meshes and grip bars are attached to the boxing gloves.
Hand Stitch Boxing Gloves and Padding Layering
Boxing gloves were initially stuffed with horsehair as padding, and this is still the case with some premium brands. However, nowadays, boxing gloves are made using layered foams or IMF – Injection Molded Foam.
The layered foams structure allows for various densities in different areas of the glove, mostly brands have their own unique combinations and patterns for padding.
The inner structure of the boxing gloves holds together partly due to the way layering is done and partly because of the leather. IMF, however, is molded and set in boxing gloves shape, so it naturally holds its shape.
Boxing Gloves Padding
After the padding is layered and the pieces are somewhat stitched, the padding is inserted into the different sections which were stitched earlier. Also, the glove’s inner lining is also put together in this step.
This is where the glove begins to take its shape and starts to become recognizable. The cuff and lining are then stitched together and are then stitched in their place on the bottom of the boxing glove.
Finishing the Boxing Gloves
If the glove is a lace-up, a template is then laid over the opening of the palm of the glove, and lace holes are punched in. however, if the gloves are Velcro, then the Velcro strap will be now stitched into place – with the two sides of the Velcro already stitched together.
At the last step, a thin band of leather is folded on the outer edges of the cuff and palm and stitched in place to finish the glove.
As mentioned earlier in the article, different brands will have their own set processes, which will vary from each other, but this, however, is a basic idea to the process. As promised earlier, let’s now discuss the boxing gloves customization.
